Darkroom vs Digital Techniques - Digital Toning

We had to produce an image showing the use of digital toning.  We had to show various styles of toning which would include blue tone, copper tone, duo tone, and selenium.

Some toning would work better than others.  Blue toning doesn't work too well with portraits as the subject can take on the appearance of a Smurf.  So you need to be careful when toning an image that the tone will enhance, rather than detract.  That said I do really like to use cyanotype, and I have used this in that past with portraits which I have felt were very successful.  I think that as it's a natural process it has a greater depth to the tone, whereas digitally toning can be a little flat.

Duotone

I don't feel that this duotone has been successful, it is very similar to the bluetone.

Duotone

This duotone is also I feel unsuccessful.  The duotone is too dark and seems to produce a lot of shadow.

Coppertone

The coppertone is reminiscent of a sepia image, and looks a bit 'old fashion'.  I do quite like this tone.

Bluetone

Although I am not too keen on the bluetone, I don't feel that it is really too blue, and appears slightly grey.  The shadows are not too harsh, and you can still see the detail.

Red tone

I don't think that this tone has worked at all.  It is just to pink/red.  It doesn't add anything to the image.

Selenium

I really like to selenium tone.  It has a similar feel to black and white , but it isn't as harsh.
